Trending Now: Breaking the Fluoride Cycle in B.C.

by Jane Shaak
Source: Health Action magazine - Summer 2014

From 1955 to 1975, a total of 21 communities installed fluoride in their water in the province of British Columbia. The very last new community to actually put fluoride into its water in B.C. happened 39 years ago, in 1975, when the resource-based community of Mackenzie installed it. There have been no new B.C. communities putting in fluoride since then.

According to a B.C. government report, 97 percent of our province's population is not being fluoridated. The remaining three percent are from five communities that still administer this hazardous chemical to their residents: Cranbrook, Fort St. John, Prince George, Sparwood and Terrace. At least three of these five communities are going to referendum on November 15, 2014, and there is still time for all five to give their residents a chance to end this practice. There is no fluoride administered in Vancouver, Vancouver Island or the Okanagan. The trend is in favour of finally breaking the fluoride cycle, and it is a matter of time and awareness.

Why do authorities and big business continue to support fluoridation? Liability might be one of the issues. Over the years, many authorities promoted fluoride in spite of peer-reviewed research of its risks. Recently, the town of Williams Lake hired a media firm to inform their community of the pros and cons of fluoride for an upcoming referendum. Hiring this firm cost $25,000; however, that is much less than the cost of future litigation. Williams Lake citizens voted to discontinue fluoridating by a huge margin. Other munici-palities can learn from this example.

Class action litigation for dental fluorosis recently began in the last few months in Prince George. (For info on dental fluorosis, go to fluoridealert.org/issues/fluorosis/) Kevin Millership is suing the city of Prince George and has a lot of experience in this area. Millership worked passionately with Kamloops, which eventually voted out fluoride in their referendum. He has also sued Cranbrook, later accepting a settlement that will go towards informing voters of fluoride's hazards prior to their upcoming November 15 referendum.

Emile Begin, a father and concerned citizen living in Prince George, has been one of the key advocates for discontinuing fluoride in this community. He reports, "In 1954, elected officials of the city of Prince George decided to fluoridate residents against vocal and published opposition. Sodium fluoride began on September 12, 1955."

Sixty years later, Prince George has the opportunity to end fluoridation with its own referendum, again being held November 15. On the worldwide scene, fluoride is being banned in many countries and continents. The trend is towards taking fluoride out of municipal water and there has been great progress. Paul Connett, of Fluoride Action Alert, has been vigilant with informing populations around the planet on this toxic practice. For this worldwide overview, go to fluoride alert.org.

UK - Lithium-water test in suicide study

Adding lithium to drinking water supplies could help to reduce suicide rates, according to a team of psychiatrists.
Naturally-occurring levels of the chemical are to be measured in supplies in Scotland and compared with suicide rates in the population it serves.
It follows similar studies in the US and Japan which found that suicide rates are higher in areas where there are low levels of lithium in the drinking water.
The chemical is a common treatment for bipolar disorder but is found in many water supplies.
The project was announced at the Royal College of Psychiatrists' International Congress in London.
Lithium levels will be measured by postcode and compared with Scottish Health Survey and NHS statistics.
The team will also test the impact of adding lithium to water supplies just as fluoride is added to prevent tooth decay.
Professor Allan Young, professor of mood disorders at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, said: " We have a considerable body of evidence that suggests that high levels of the chemical in the water supply could save lives.
"The key to lithium's impact on reducing suicide as a pharmaceutical agent is in reducing impulsivity as well as depression.
"We are now embarking on urgent research to establish the impact of taking low levels of lithium as medication, as well as adding lithium to the water supply in much the same way as fluoride is added to prevent tooth decay."
Dr Daniel Smith, from the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow, said: " If we can become deficient in calcium and zinc, there is absolutely no reason why we cannot become deficient in lithium.
"Previous studies have not always taken different variables such as poverty and unemployment into account when making this comparison.
"In Scotland, we have ideal conditions in which to carry out this research. A single organisation, Scottish Water is able to measure levels of lithium by postcode and we can make use of the excellent routine data which is available from sources such as the Scottish Health Survey and from the Information Services Division of NHS Scotland."

Peel Region liable for residents harmed by fluoridated water, lawyer says

Peel residents’ group wants fluoride removed from drinking water because of possible health risks such as bone cancer.

By: San Grewal Urban Affairs Reporter, Published on Thu Jun 26 2014
Peel Region council has been told it could be legally liable for harming residents whose health is put at risk by fluoridated water.
“Not only is the region responsible and liable to the people of Peel, individual councillors are responsible and liable,” said lawyer Nader Hasan, who is representing the group Concerned Residents of Peel.
He told council that Charter rights protecting against government-inflicted harm are being violated. Hasan warned that if fluoride is not removed, a costly legal battle could unfold.
The group, with the help of Councillor John Sprovieri, wants fluoride removed from drinking water because of possible health risks such as bone cancer. He wants experts on both sides to present updated evidence.
Council voted to defer a move to reopen the issue until September, when the region’s legal staff will present an opinion on Hasan’s arguments.
In 2007, Health Canada stated the practice is safe at the levels allowed in the country.
In 2011, the City of Toronto public health board, facing some public pressure, moved to continue fluoridating the water supply. In 2012, Halton Region council narrowly voted (11-9) to retain fluoride.
Numerous studies around the world suggest low-level fluoride poses no health risks and is very effective in fighting tooth decay.
Hasan argued many of these studies are outdated or were not peer reviewed.
Jurisdictions across North America, such as Calgary and Windsor, have removed fluoride from drinking water recently, but GTA municipalities have yet to follow the trend.
“Many jurisdictions, including all of western Europe, are not fluoridated,” Hasan said. “Yet we see rates of tooth decay going down in these jurisdictions.”
Mississauga resident Liesa Cianchino, a founding member of the residents’ group, helped push the issue onto the council agenda.
“Too many people are getting sick,” she said after the presentation.

UK - Statement from Hampshire County Council

It is a  matter of public record that Hampshire County Council has  opposed fluoridation with regard to the impact that it has on the residents of Hampshire.

We are currently in a process of legal argument with Public Health England and it would be inappropriate for me to say more at this point- other than we have not yet seen a legal argument in favour of the view that Public Health England can implement such a scheme.

Scientists Confirm Israel Health Minister's Fluoridation Concerns are Justified

NEW YORKJune 25, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Scientists and professionals from around the world applaud the decision made by Israel Health Minister, Yael German, to end mandatory fluoridation in Israel to protect the health of Israelis and decry the political backlash she's received to reverse her scientifically sound decision, reports the Fluoride Action Network (FAN).
  • delivering medicine via the water supply is reckless
  • swallowing fluoride delivers risks without benefits
  • over 100 animal and 45+ human studies link fluoride to brain deficits
  • non-fluoridated and fluoridated countries have similar cavity rates
  • low-income families can achieve better dental health by safer means
  • the US FDA says fluoride is an unapproved drug
  • fluoride-overdose symptoms – dental fluorosis (discolored teeth) - is prevalent among
America's youth.  Racial disparities in the U.S. exist for Black and Mexican American youth as this demographic have significantly higher levels of the more severe forms of dental fluorosis-while the US still faces a dental health crisis.
They write: "Your position is a model for the public health community both in Israel and in our respective communities. It is sound, based on the current literature and the need to protect the health of citizens from unnecessary ingestion of fluoride."
The scientists offer to send Paul Connett, PhD, co-author of The Case Against Fluoride, to Israel to debate any pro-fluoridation expert.
According to Professor Paul Connett, director of the Fluoride Action Network,
"I doubt very much that we will need to purchase an air ticket to do this because almost invariably when the very vocal promoters of fluoridation are challenged to debate their confidence seems to evaporate. But sadly they frequently get away with their bullying tactics because so few people are knowledgeable on the scientific details of this issue and do not realize how weak the pro-fluoridation position is, despite the 'impressive' endorsements it receives in pro-fluoridation countries like the U.S."

Health Ministry Weighs Fluoride-in-Water Debate

The Knesset’s Labor, Wellbeing and Health Cabinet deliberated on Tuesday a proposal to stop putting fluoride in tap water, and potential ramifications of doing so.
At the start of the meeting, the head of the Health Ministry’s Public Health Services department, Prof. Itamar Gruto, said that the ministry is deliberating the possibility of not entirely removing fluoride from tap water, but rather to allow local authorities to add fluoride into their water, should they so desire.

Concerned Residents of Peel to End Fluoridation:
Prominent Lawyer Presents Legal Opinion to
Decision-Makers at the Region of Peel
"Artificial Water Fluoridation is a Threat to
Public Health"

REGION OF PEEL, ONTARIO, Jun 24, 2014 (Marketwired via COMTEX) -- On June 26, 2014, lawyer Nader Hasan of the law firm, Ruby, Shiller, Chan, Hasan Barristers, will present a legal opinion to Peel Regional Councillors arguing that artificial water fluoridation is unconstitutional and illegal. Mr. Hasan is counsel to the Concerned Residents of Peel to End Fluoridation, a group that has been dedicated to ending the artificial fluoridation of Peel's drinking water.
Liesa Cianchino, Chair of the Concerned Residents of Peel to End Fluoridation stated today: "Artificial water fluoridation is a serious health concern. It's high time that the Region looked at the science and end this unsafe, ineffective, unproven, unethical, unnatural and harmful practice."
"There is a growing movement to end artificial water fluoridation in the Region of Peel and Worldwide. Peel residents are not alone. Neighbouring communities in Toronto, Peterborough, Durham, Muskoka, Halton, Hamilton, London and many others are working very hard to end this unsafe and ineffective practice because of the known adverse effects on human health and the environment," said Cianchino.
Community leaders and Councillors from other municipalities plan to attend the June 26 Regional Council meeting, as the question of artificial water fluoridation is an issue of ongoing concern for communities across Ontario and Canada.
We invite you to attend this meeting on Thursday, June 26th to hear lawyer, Nader Hasan present his important findings and arguments on this controversial issue.

Bradford children’s rotten teeth prompt calls for fluoridation

Bradford children’s rotten teeth prompt calls for fluoridationBradford children’s rotten teeth prompt calls for fluoridation
Shocking statistics about children’s oral health in Bradford have caused public health experts from Public Health England to issue fresh calls for water fluoridation.

The new figures suggest that three young children have teeth pulled out in hospital under general anaesthetic every week in Bradford. Official statistics show that 462 children under the age of five were admitted to hospital for dental treatment over a three-year period, or just under three children every week. The figures do not include extractions carried out in dental surgeries.

The children were being treated for dental caries, infections caused by eating too much sugary food and failing to maintain good oral hygiene. Most of them had rotten teeth pulled out.

Figures for the surrounding areas of Leeds were also worryingly high. The number of under-fives admitted to hospital with dental caries between 2009 and 2012 was 406 in Kirklees, 197 in Calderdale and 516 in Leeds itself.

In light of the news, Public Health England (PHE) has called for water fluoridation schemes to be considered in areas where decay is rife. The organisation says that the main cause of rotten teeth in very young children is deprivation, and the number of under-fives admitted to hospital is up to 45 % lower where water is fluoridated. Fluoride helps to strengthen teeth and reduce the risk of decay.

A PHE spokesman said: “Evidence suggests that fluoridating water is the single most effective step we can take to reduce tooth decay generally, both among children and adults, irrespective of personal behaviour.”

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Bradford Council said that it had not taken a stance on fluoridation, but did encourage parents to use fluoride varnish treatment on their children’s teeth.

Deborah Cochran, practice manager at Parkside Road Dental Care Unit in West Bowling, said: “We’ve had people come in here who barely know what a toothbrush is, and have never been to a dentist before in their lives.
“When you’re faced with that, it is a very difficult problem to combat. Adding fluoride to the water would definitely make a difference, but education is the key.”

What a dumb solution.
People don't know what a toothbrush is? Where have they come from?

2004 letter worth reading again

Blair's Bloody Nose
By Dr. H.C. Moolenburgh, Holland*
A couple of years ago Tony Blair asked a scientific committee in York to establish "once and for all" that fluoridation is safe and effective.
As Professor Burgstahler has shown, the report of the York committee was heavily flawed. Much negative data was not taken into account. Yet the final report was a bloody nose for Tony.
Instead of the claimed 65% (later 50%) caries reduction the committee came up with a meagre 15% reduction but also had to confess that they had not been able to find high standard scientific work confirming the effectiveness of fluoridation.
The report in essence told the dentists to do their homework over, which of course is a severe case of egg on their faces after more than half a century fluoridation.

What was really disturbing was an increase to 48% in disfiguring mottled enamel in the fluoridation regions.

Moreover, what was really disturbing was an increase to 48% of disfiguring mottled enamel in the fluoridation regions.
Professor Shusheela says that sometimes the disfigurement of the frontal teeth is so severe that it interferes with the marriage chances of girls. (She speaks about India of course, but what about the "less privileged" classes in the Western world? Is the fluoride lobby not always crying big crocodile tears about them? Have they the money to repair the fluoride damage?)
And now look what happens. Tony Blair waits two years, probably hoping that the nasty facts will go away, at least fade in the minds of the people. And then his government announces suddenly that they will try and fluoridate the whole of the United Kingdom. The spokeswoman of the Dental Association lobbying for a total fluoridation supports her urging for total fluoridation with the claim that it "gives up to 50% reduction of caries".
This is a blatant lie in the face of their own evidence. When will we at last arrest these people and with good, sound old police work find out what moves them to corrupt science and hoodwink the public? There must be a reason for their fanatical adherence to a theory that long has been proved wrong. It is not their concern for children's teeth so it must be something else.
Do they have a mental illness like the authorities who haunted witches in the 16th and 17th centuries (Death toll, 100,00 innocent women)? Is it money from the polluting industries? Is there something in the old story that with fluoridation you can more effectively control a population (for totalitarians something to make their mouths water)?
I have never found a satisfying answer, but I hope to live long enough one day to hear the solution.

Ireland - No plans to examine fluoride in public water despite promise

The Government have no plans for an international group of consultants to examine the use of fluoride in public water schemes, despite promises by a minister that this would be done.
Junior health minister Alex White has said that there are no plans for such a consortium to examine fluoride in water and a Government-commissioned review will instead examine concerns.
His comments come despite a previous promise by Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney that the matter would be investigated by international consultants.
Mr Coveney made the pledge to Fine Gael councillors in March just before they voted to ban the use of fluoride in county schemes.
His promise was made behind doors to party councillors at a meeting in Cork.
Councillors had written to Health Minister James Reilly urging him to stop fluoridation.
Ireland is the only EU country and one of only two in the world with a national mandatory public water fluoridation policy.
During a lengthy debate on the issue on the matter in March, then Mayor of County Cork, Fine Gael councillor Noel O’Connor, said he welcomed the news given to his party members by Mr Coveney.
But Mr White, in a written parliamentary response to Independent TD Denis Naughten, said there were “no plans” to establish such a group.
Mr White said his department kept the policy of water fluoridation under constant review and that a review on fluoridation was being conducted by the Health Research Board.
Responding to Mr White’s comments, deputy Naughten told the Irish Examiner: “There has been a lot of concern about fluoridation, this was reflected in the debate in Cork County Council. There is a lot of merit in what Simon Coveney has suggested in getting an international group to look at this and give their view.
“It should be facilitated. Maybe we should get a different answer on this.
“There are question marks over the use of fluoride in water particularly for very young children and this is a cause of concern for parents.”

‘Who would have thought that it ever would have happened? Someone in mainstream medicine and peer reviewed literature and journals would publish the ‘unthinkable’: fluoride, the stuff they put into municipal water supplies supposedly to ‘protect’ teeth from cavities, is a neurotoxin.’

Lancet March 2014

Summary

Neurodevelopmental disabilities, including autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and other cognitive impairments, affect millions of children worldwide, and some diagnoses seem to be increasing in frequency. Industrial chemicals that injure the developing brain are among the known causes for this rise in prevalence. In 2006, we did a systematic review and identified five industrial chemicals as developmental neurotoxicants: lead, methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls, arsenic, and toluene. Since 2006, epidemiological studies have documented six additional developmental neurotoxicants—manganese, fluoride, chlorpyrifos, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene, and the polybrominated diphenyl ethers. We postulate that even more neurotoxicants remain undiscovered. To control the pandemic of developmental neurotoxicity, we propose a global prevention strategy. Untested chemicals should not be presumed to be safe to brain development, and chemicals in existing use and all new chemicals must therefore be tested for developmental neurotoxicity. To coordinate these efforts and to accelerate translation of science into prevention, we propose the urgent formation of a new international clearinghouse.

Fluoridated Water Sinks in Hartford

By Jordan Cuddemi
Hartford — A push by a group of Upper Valley public health advocates to fluoridate Hartford’s municipal water supply isn’t gaining much traction among town officials.
The Selectboard unofficially decided Tuesday night not to slate time at a future meeting for a formal presentation from members of the Upper Valley Oral Health Coalition, which earlier this year launched a “Happy Hartford Teeth” campaign to encourage fluoridation of the town’s municipal water supply. The system serves roughly 90 percent of Hartford’s 10,000 residents, according to John Choate, utilities superintendent at the Department of Public Works.
Plainfield resident Beth Kopp, coordinator of the coalition, recently brought the idea to newly elected Selectboard members Matt Bucy and Sandra Mariotti, and Mariotti on Tuesday asked her colleagues about allotting time at a future meeting for the campaign to speak about fluoridation.
Members of the board indicated they were wary of formal consideration, given the controversy surrounding fluoride.......

'Millions’ avoiding dentist to keep social life afloat

British Dental Health Foundation logo

Millions of people are prioritising their social life ahead of their oral health, potentially endangering their health in the process.....

Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE, urges people to discover why placing social life ahead of regular visits to the dentist isn’t a smart move.

Dr Carter said: “Visiting the dentist regularly, as often as they recommend, is a cornerstone of good oral health practice. If people are choosing to overlook that and perhaps harm their oral health further by snacking at the cinema, drinking too much alcohol or indulging in a poor diet, they are risking further complications by just skipping one appointment.

“In the last two years poor oral health has been linked to a number of conditions, some of which are life-threatening. Breast cancer, strokes, diabetes, hospital-acquired infections, erectile dysfunction, pneumonia, bowel cancer, endocarditis, oral cancer, dementia, pancreatic cancer, psoriasis and pregnancy complications have all been associated with varying degrees of poor oral health.

“Gum disease in particular has been associated with serious health issues. It affects most people at some point in their lives, so there is no excuse for ignoring good dental hygiene. The good news is that poor oral health is nearly always preventable, so it is important that people make caring for their teeth a top priority. Regular check-ups are really important to give the dentist a chance to assess your oral health and, if necessary, give your teeth a scale and polish.

Really! Pay to have all the teeth pulled out then. No more life threatening diseases.

Flame Retardants and Fluoride—Two Neurotoxic Chemicals Again Linked to Reduced IQ

By Dr. Mercola

Did you know that items you come into contact with every day, such as your couch cushions, your carpeting, and your mattress, might be exposing you to highly toxic compounds?

In most cases, they will contain flame-retardant chemicals that have been linked to serious health risks like infertility, birth defects, neurodevelopmental delays, reduced IQ scores and behavioral problems in children, hormone disruptions, and various forms of cancer.

In fact, flame retardant chemicals were recently identified as one of 17 "high priority" chemical groups that should be avoided....
An estimated 90 percent of Americans have flame-retardant chemicals in their bodies, and studies have linked them to human health risks, including liver, kidney, testicular, and breast cancers
Flame retardant chemicals, such as PBDEs, were recently identified as one of 17 “high priority” chemical groups that should be avoided to reduce your breast cancer risk
Recent research shows that children whose mothers were exposed to PBDEs during pregnancy have lower IQ, and are more prone to hyperactivity disorders
The disgusting irony is that there’s little evidence to suggest that these chemicals actually work when it comes to saving your life if there’s a fire
Tests show that not only do they not work, but they actually make injuries worse by creating more toxic smoke when “protected” items burn
Related research has identified a number of toxic chemicals that need to be restricted in order to protect children’s health, including PBDEs and fluoride

Exchange of letters between Cllr Cooke and Lord Colwyn

Dear Lord Colwyn

Thank you for your prompt response.  Although it does seem very scarce in detail.

The incidence of dental decay when compared to to non fluoridated areas does no more than tell me the statistics have been carefully selective.  It is not science – it is almost no better than anecdotal observation. Any “study” purporting to have such a conclusion could be discredited.

I also think that the effect of fluorosis on teeth needs a bit more of a response than that you are simply “aware” of the issue.  What would you propose should be done about it?  It was considered when fluoridation was first set to the one part per million that “acceptable” levels of fluorosis would be 10% of children.  We now find it is closer to 40% – possibly due to the plethora of fluoride coming in from many sources. Ireland and America for instance have reduce their fluoride levels to 0.7 parts per million.

At least in toothpaste it is Sodium fluoride (better known to some of us older ones as rat poison) of pharmaceutical grading and can be washed and spat out.  In water there does occur “natural” fluoride. That is Calcium fluoride. It is only in it’s natural form that calcium fluoride may be excreted from the body. Otherwise the body needs to deal with the released aqueous fluoride ions by sucking calcium from bones and organs in order to excrete it.  This is science. No one is saying this does not happen.  Pro-fluoridation people simply gloss over it with their outrageous claims that “fluoride is good for teeth”.

We are now told that “fluoride works topically” on teeth.  Fluoridated toothpaste may perhaps explain how tooth decay has been falling at least as fast in non-fluoridated areas.  Although my personal view is that fluoride in any form (being a poison) will kill the bacteria on teeth that lead to tooth decay. It would be a lot better if education programmes and good practice got sugar out of the diets of young children.  But certainly the internal digestion of fluoride does no more than damage teeth. And it would be absurd to think that it could have that effect on teeth and not affect the rest of the body.  Therefore the same process by which fluoride damages the tooth will also damage the skeletal structures inside the body.  There is NEVER any testing on the NHS for skeletal fluorosis. They simply call it arthritis and wait for suffers to die (probably from some other, maybe associated?, condition) after many years of increasing and unnecessary pain.  It is only in the very late stages of skeletal fluorosis that it is ever identified as such. Too late!

But your response to this is that somehow I might not understand?  I think I have shown here that I do understand the effect of the disassociated fluoride ion the human body.  I would add that you will find NO process or organ whatsoever in the human body that requires fluoride.  It is equally absurd to think we might improve on God’s gift of health by adding fluoride – in whatever form.

But – now fluoride ions aside – you seem dismissive of what other poisons the use of hexafluorosilicic acid also adds to the water. Over 5 parts “other” for each 1 part of fluoride. The mixture is a veritable cocktail of toxins and dangerous heavy metals. This as you know is dismissed because the water is deemed to be of potable quality and within limits at the point when it comes from the tap. The fact that such a mixture being dripped into our water, our bodies (where they act as accumulative poisons) and the environment minute by minute, year by year, naturally alarms most people if ever they get to understand it. Anybody else would face serious legal prosecution, probably imprisonment, for doing this.

In short your response seems to précis and somehow parody the complaint I made in my first letter to you – that pro-fluoridationists blandly accept without any real scientific proofs that fluoridation is somehow “good” (“safe and effective” is what they invariably say). Any argument thereafter being sheer emotive – pertaining to the extraction of young people’s decaying teeth.  You might say similarly about the scientific evidence suggesting very many disorders/diseases caused by fluoridation.  Maybe? But at least the anti-fluoride science looks far more widespread, detailed and convincing than the ridiculously poor science on which pro-fluoridationists rely.

It does appear to me that the only thing really going for the pro-fluoridationists views is that they are backed by the NHS, the Government. And the big corporations who would otherwise have huge expense and headaches ever trying to dispose of this very toxic waste.

Perhaps the more cynical amongst us would say forget government or the NHS – it’s the money of the corporate industries that keeps this devil’s fluoridation project afloat?   Can you see why people might think like that?

Dear Mr Cooke

Thank you very much for your letter. I am always pleased to hear from people who have different views about the benefits of fluoridation at 1 part per million.  I believe that the situation and incidence of dental decay in Birmingham when compared with non-fluoridated areas really does speak for itself. Of course I am aware of the incidence of fluorosis in some fluoride areas due to an excess of the ion.
I spent many years trying to deal with the problems of fillings and extractions for young children and I still have nightmares about my experiences removing decayed teeth under general anaesthetic. It really isn't fair to withhold such a simple preventive measure.
Your comments about fluoride and  hexafluorosalicilic acid do make me think that you do not really understand the mechanisms and use of the disassociated fluoride ion.
However, I respect your views and look forward to the next stages of this on-going debate.
Yours sincerely

Anthony Colwyn

Our children are contaminated with chemicals!

Hundreds of scientists, doctors, parents and activists worldwide have voiced and expressed their fears and sounded the warning sirens. Unfortunately, their calls have also fallen on deaf ears.......
image21.jpgDue to their smaller bodies and undeveloped systems, infants and children are at a much higher risk than adults to becoming contaminated by toxic material. They are daily exposed to thousands of synthetic chemicals in their environments; some we know of and others we don’t. Everyday, new untested chemicals are added to baby and adult foods as additives (coloring, taste enhancers, stabilizers, preservatives, emulsifiers, artificial sweeteners, flavors). Other dangerous toxins are included in the manufacturing of kitchenware (coating of pots and pans), plastic water bottles and other house-ware products. They are also found in personal care products (shampoos, lotions), fabrics of children’s wear (flame-retardants), cleaning agents, paints, glues, toys, furnishing, textile, carpets, pesticides and more.
According Dr. Landrigan, such harmful “chemicals have never been tested for toxicity” on children or adults. Moreover, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate them. Of course, the Saudi FDA does not have an independent view from American FDA.
Dr. Landrigan explains that for their weights and smaller bodies, children drink “more water, eat more food, and breathe more than adults,” making them more exposed to contaminated water (heavy metals, fluoride), food additives (colorings, flavors), artificial sweeteners, toxic chemicals, plastics, environmental pollutants, fumes, car exhaust, heavy metals and industrial waste. Moreover, children’s body are not well equipped to detoxify from such poisonous substances. Infants, in particular, have systems that are not mature enough to filter out toxins, making them more susceptible to all kinds of toxicity.
Next week, InshaAllah, I will continue discussing the effects of chemicals on human health and especially on foetuses, infants, children and adolescents. It is our duty as parents and caregivers to do our best to make sure our children are kept healthy and safe by protecting their health and wellbeing in order to see them become healthy, productive and constructive adults as well as protect the continuity of the human species in at least the way it was passed over to us.

What is the Difference

On the heels of recent news that the fluoride in North American drinking water supplies isconsidered to be a neurotoxin according to a recent study in the top peer-review medical journal The Lancet, on par with some of the most notorious environmental toxins out there, many people are becoming more interested in the truth about fluoride.
Specifically, most people still do not know the difference between the naturally occurring calcium fluoride and other industrialized forms that are added to water supplies in North America (but not throughout most of Europe, and many other high-tech countries).
That’s because the term “fluoride” is often thrown around without making a distinction between these  substances.
There are three types of fluoride used to “fluoridate” water supplies: Fluorosilicic acid, sodium fluorosilicate and sodium fluoride.
Fluorosilicic acid is the type most often used for cost reasons, and it is derived from phosphate fertilizers according to the CDC’s website.
The other two are created by adding either table salt or caustic soda to the mix.

Fluoride Corrodes Town’s Pipes

These types of fluoride can be quite corrosive, as one town found out the hard way when the fluoride they used to add to their water supply began corroding pipes and damaging city vehicles. Officials from the town, Buffalo, Missouri, voted to stop fluoridating the water supply recently due to these issues.
In contrast with these types of fluoride is calcium fluoride, which is a much safer version of fluoride.
Calcium fluoride is considered the “least toxic” and in some cases “relatively harmless” according to the site fluoridedetective.com, and that’s because of its high insolubility.
Magnesium and especially calcium are known as minerals that counteract the effects of fluoride, an example of how nature often pairs antidotes with poisons or designs complete foods that mitigate harmful substances for the most part.
This type of fluoride is often found in natural waters, while the above industrial byproducts are added to water supplies, a highly controversial practice that more and more people are asking to be changed.

Many Towns are Being Pressured to Remove Flouride

While it was originally added as a way to assist in the area of dental health, more and more people are questioning whether that is actually true and many towns are removing fluoride due to grassroots citizens’ movements.
(A list of towns that have removed fluoride since 2014 can be viewed here).
And considering the health risks involved, not to mention the safety concerns and costs, many cities and towns will have a decision to make in the coming years about whether or not to stop fluoridation.
