Nottinghamshire County Council Champions Expansion of Water Fluoridation Schemes
To enhance the oral health for all residents the council is taking the lead in advocating for the expansion of water fluoridation to the whole of the county.
Water fluoridation, a scientifically proven method of adding small amounts of fluoride to drinking water, is a key player in the fight against tooth decay. Already, 30% of Nottinghamshire residents, around 247,000 people, are reaping the benefits of this public health measure.
The Council is now setting its sights on extending these benefits to other areas of the County. The potential rewards are impressive: a 35% reduction in decayed, missing and filled teeth in fiver-year-old children, a 56% decrease in hospital admissions for tooth extractions in children from the most deprived areas, and a remarkable return of £12.71 after five years and £21.98 after ten years for every £1 invested in fluoridation.
Councillor Dr John Doddy, Chairman of the Health and Wellbeing board, who proposed the approved motion to champion the oral health agenda, stated: “This is a health inequality that is completely preventable. If we fluoridated the water across Nottinghamshire, we would see a 15% increase in five year old children who are completely free of dental decay at all and there would be a significant reduction of people going into hospital for tooth extractions.
“The evidence for fluoridation is irrefutable, it’s backed by the World Health Organisation, the British dental associations are calling out for it as well. We want to bring together partners and organisations across our county, to work together to improve the oral health of everyone in our county.”
The County Council will foster collaboration with partners across the county, including district and borough councils, Nottingham City Council, Integrated Care Boards, Integrated Care System, and the water companies to delve into the benefits of the wate fluoridations scheme. While the final decision rests with Central Government, Nottinghamshire County Council is actively lobbying for new or varied schemes.
Any changes to water fluoridation will involve a public consultation led by the Government.

Councillor wants fluoride added to all of Nottinghamshire’s household water supplies
A doctor and councillor is campaigning for fluoride to be added to all tap water in Nottinghamshire to help prevent tooth decay.
Councillor Dr John Doddy, who is also Chairman of the Health & Wellbeing Board at Nottinghamshire County Council, said he is the ‘pied piper’ of a campaign for water fluoridation in the county.
He said it is ‘insanity’ that fluoride has not been added to water across the whole country yet.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in some soils, food and drink which strengthens the outer surface of teeth, making them more resistant to decay.
It is added to dental products including many toothpastes, but can also be put into tap water so it reaches whole populations.

N.Z. Water fluoridation fires up opponents in New Plymouth
There were passionate scenes at the New Plymouth council chambers as councillors came under attack for allowing fluoride to be put back in the district's water supply.
James Kemp took aim at the former director-general of health, Sir Ashley Bloomfield.
"I can't believe we are having this conversation - we've already voted in this area 'no'. Bloomfield has stitched you all up and buggered off," Kemp said.Frustrated at the parade of naysayers, New Plymouth grandmother Pip Abernethy tried to interject, crying out "how long are we going to have to listen to these lies", but she was shouted down.
Abernethy was ushered out of the chamber with her 'NPDC Opts 4 the Science' placard.
"I was standing up for science, for children's teeth, the Dental Association of New Zealand, the Ashley Bloomfields of this world, the Jacinda Arderns who had the courage to tell councils it's time to stop listening to the misinformation and lies and do what is right," Abernethy said.
New Plymouth Mayor Neil Holdom said there were strong opinions on fluoride, but the decision had been taken out of council's hands.
"This is an issue where government has made a determination, council has been provided with a direction and you'd be aware that penalties for not following the order from the ministry is a $250,000 fine, plus $10,000 a day and the prospect of criminal charges," Holdom said.
The council looked into providing a non-fluoridated supply from a private bore to those adamant they did not want fluoride, but legal advice did not support the idea, he said.
The Ministry of Health said strong international evidence showed there were no adverse health effects from fluoride at the levels used in New Zealand water supplies.
