FLUORIDE ACTION NETWORK

FAN Bulletin 1050: Professionals' video getting rave reviews March 8, 2009

We have finished sending out the new FAN video (28:30 minutes), Professional Perspectives on Fluoridation, to all those who made a generous donation during our annual FAN fund drive. I am happy to tell you that it is receiving rave reviews. I have printed a sampling below. Now that we have completed this part of our distribution we are nearly ready for general distribution. And we have a very special offer. On this videotape, which also features FAN's four short video vignettes (Osmunson, Foster, Howard and the Kidney issue), there is a slight glitch in the Osmunson section (not the 28 minute video) where there is lip-sync problem. This is being corrected for our next order. Meanwhile, because of this small blemish we are offering our 40 remaining copies of this version at $15.00 (US) and $17.00 (other countries). This price includes first class mail. (Send your check, payable to FAN, to Connett, 82 Judson Street, Canton NY 13617). While we want the DVD shown to the widest audience we now have to add the following for those who will make copies: -- the video & labels cannot be altered in any way-- the video cannot be sold by others-- if you want to copy certain segments of the video, please contact Ellen at pesticides@fluoridealert.org I think this FAN video is critically important to our efforts worldwide. As you know the first thing that promoters of fluoridation do when communities attempt to halt or reject fluoridation is to call us names and rant on about the "junk science" that we are supposed to practice (for a particularly nasty example of this abuse see March 4 news article in a Plattsburgh NY paper and see Bill Osmunson's response below). I am sure that psychologists will have a field day explaining why they do do this (I guess it is easier than actually reading what we say or the scientific literature on which our arguments are based). Meanwhile, this video offers the perfect antidote to the notion that our opposition is neither honest nor science based. We not only hope that our readers will use this tape to educate their friends, their doctors and their local officials, but also use it to get more professionals to sign the Professionals' Statement calling for an End to Fluoridation worldwide.

Our current number of signers is 2,172. With this video and with your help we are hoping to get many more.Paul ConnettComments on the new FAN video:
From Dr. David Kennedy, former President of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and ToxicologyAll I could think of saying about your latest DVD was BRILLIANT. Betty and Iwatched it last evening and we were both very impressed. We went back andwatched each of the short takes individually too. Very well done Icongratulate you for this excellent presentation. From Gerry Cooper, Toronto I just received and played the DVD this morning and it's is fabulous. Congratulations to all who had a hand in producing it and participating in it. I will be using the DVD in a series of meetings I am looking to arrange with municipal representatives and grass roots organizations here in Toronto over the coming weeks and months. It is a strong and compelling counterweight to the entrenched vested interests who continue to misinform and misadvise the political leadership at both the local and provincial levels. From Mark Lohbauer, New Jersey (NJ is currently threatened with mandatory fluoridation)Thanks for "Professional Perspectives" DVD. What a well-produced video that powerfully states the case. Well done!
Dr. Bill Osmunson's response to the attack on Paul Connett and other FAN members by Plattsburgh, NY, dentist:
RE: Local dentists firm in fluoride support SAY "NO" TO FLUORIDATION

When scientists do not have scientific support for a theory and are challenged, the response is to attack the messenger rather than the message. I will not attack the people supporting fluoridation because as a dentist I supported fluoride supplements and fluoridation of water. I thought I could see the difference in my patients, but I was looking at socioeconomics not fluoridation. The rich are healthier, the poor have more cavities. A careful review of both sides of the research was like a knee in the gut. We are ingesting too much fluoride from many sources. Fluoridation no longer reduces tooth decay or dental expenses. The risks from fluoridated water are serious, very serious. Some have claimed those opposed to fluoridation use junk science. Not true, unless one considers the Journal of Public Health Dentistry and the Journal of the American Dental Association are also junk publications. There is more than enough good strong scientific evidence to stop fluoridation and I would be pleased to send some of the evidence to anyone who asks. First consider mother's milk, 250 times lower in fluoride than formula mixed with Plattsburgh water. The American Dental Association and Centers for Disease Control recommend fluoridated water not be used for making formula. Those promoting fluoridation are in effect suggesting that mother's milk is flawed, defective, and inadequate for infants. I disagree. The mother's body and breast filters out the fluoride protecting the infant and there is no better scientific evidence for an infant's diet. Second read the label on fluoridated toothpaste. With variable wording it says, "drug facts," "use a pea size," "do not swallow," "if more than brushing is swallowed contact the poison control center." Very serious warnings. A "pea" size of toothpaste has 0.25 mg of fluoride, the same as one glass of fluoridated water. The Food and Drug Administration has serious concerns about a very small amount of fluoride. Fluoridation is an unapproved drug and unapproved for fluoridation and considered by the FDA to be one of thousands of illegal drugs. Remember the CDC does not test the safety of drugs, the FDA does. It makes no sense to force everyone to swallow what the FDA warns not to swallow. If someone wants to swallow fluoride, they can disregard the FDA and swallow a pea size of toothpaste and let others simply say "NO" to drugs, respect the FDA warnings and please, permit and respect the freedom of choice of others.
