Five people were hospitalized after a chemical spill forced the evacuation of 100 workers in a southeast Calgary industrial plant.
Shortly before 4 p.m. yesterday, emergency personnel rushed to Alberta Processing in the 7000 block of Ogden Dale Pl., after two chemicals mixed together to cause a toxic reaction, said fire department spokeswoman Virginia Buckley.
The five men taken from the rendering plant to the Rockyview and Peter Lougheed hospitals all complained of breathing problems, but EMS officials said the patients are in stable condition.
It's believed bleach reacted with polyaluminum fluoride, which was accidentally pumped into the wrong vat, to create the toxic gas.
