USA - Dental program to help area needy

For Central Virginia residents too poor to afford dental care, the consequences can be calamitous.

Untreated tooth decay, gum disease and inflammation can lead to diabetes, pulmonary problems and cardiovascular issues, and mothers-to-be can face increased risk of low birth weights for their babies.

Moreover, bad teeth can stymie self-confidence. Employers are less likely to hire or promote someone with poor dental hygiene. And toothaches can stand in the way of work and school productivity, advocates said.

“Dental care and good dental health is a critical component of good overall health,” said Dr. Terry Dickinson, executive director of the Virginia Dental Association. “It’s a serious problem when people can’t afford it.”
