Australia - Call for Queensland fluoridation
Dentist continues calls for fluoridated drinking water
A Sunshine Coast dentist has renewed calls for fluoride to be added to Queensland's water supplies.
In September, Food Standards Australia New Zealand will ask for public comment on whether the ban on fluoridated bottled water should be removed. The Queensland president of the Australian Dental Association, Maleny dentist Martin Webb, says fluoridating bottled water would not help those most likely to suffer tooth decay.
Dr Webb says adding fluoride to drinking water would be far more effective.
"There's going to be a segment of the population that either choose not to or can't afford bottled water," he said.
"Often the case that people who can afford it the least are those that suffer the most with tooth decay. Fluoridation of community water supplies covers everyone, covers the kids, the older people, everyone who needs it."
