Australia - Decaying dental care nothing to smile about

The number of children requiring general anaesthesia for dental surgery, usually teeth extraction, has tripled in the past decade.........

The dental health of Australia's school children has been in decline for a decade and one in every two teeth of people aged 35 to 44 has some decay.
Some 650,000 Australians mostly poor and elderly are on waiting lists for public dental care and an estimated 2.3million people who are not eligible for public care struggle to afford private dental services.
The economic costs go well beyond the health budget, in terms of lost productivity and absenteeism from school and work. Even the military suffers, with 8.4-14.6 per cent of soldiers having their work performance impacted by dental problems at some point in a six-month deployment.
Dental decay should be seen for what it is: a disease that is aggravated by lifestyle and diet, has substantial health-care effects and costs, and is largely preventable.
Dental health should get the national leadership and priority it warrants
