Kenya - High fluoride levels in water

A Dentist, Dr. Luti Mutakha, said the fluoride levels in most boreholes were above the 1.5 milligrams per cubic meter, recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). But most areas in the county produce as high as 15 milligrams per cubic meter.

She said: “The high levels of fluoride in this county are manifest in the brown teeth, which end up breaking easily due to their brittle nature.’’

She said the fluoride in drinking and cooking water causes the teeth to become mottled with dark spots, which not only makes them unsightly, but also affects confidence and wellbeing of the person.

Dr. Mutakha appealed to the county government to urgently de-fluoride the water before distribution. ‘’It is not only unfair but inhuman for people who have been entitled with leadership positions to do nothing to ensure the health of their people,’’ she said........................
