Australia - No changes planned for laws on water fluoridation
Queensland Health Minister Cameron Dick responded to a petition presented to Parliament earlier this year calling for the State Government to mandate fluoridation of the state's water supply.
"The Government recognises that water fluoridation is a safe and effective means of preventing tooth decay for people of all ages," Mr Dick said in his response."However, the Government is committed to working collaboratively with local governments to support water fluoridation rather than imposing requirements on them.
"Although the Government has no plans to change the legislative arrangements for water fluoridation in Queensland, it will continue to strongly encourage local governments to adopt water fluoridation as part of a comprehensive approach to improving oral health outcomes." Hervey Bay MP Ted Sorensen presented the water fluoridation petition on behalf of resident Nikki Boswell from the region.
It said many regions had chosen to stop water fluoridation after control of the issue was handed over to local councils in 2012 "in spite of it being the most effective and socially equitable way to prevent dental caries".
Australian Dental Association Queensland president Dr Julee Birch said the association would like to see the State Government take responsibility for water fluoridation. Dr Birch said the ADAQ wanted all water in Queensland fluoridated as the health benefits were well researched and studied. "There's no question it's of benefit to the population," Dr Birch said.
