Public water fluoridation to prevent tooth decay defies common sense and ethics. After numerous studies, its actual benefits can only be viewed as speculative. It uses chemicals known to cause adverse health effects, and as a medication administered without our informed consent, violates our freedom of choice of medications.
The Centers for Disease Control (USA) has conceded that fluoride’s effectiveness is principally by topical application, not by ingestion as previously believed. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and fluoride varnish treatments at the dentist are considered effective topical applications. Dental fluoride varnish typically contains 2.27 percent fluoride ion (5 percent sodium fluoride), more than 32,000 times the strength (effectiveness) of fluoridated drinking water. Perhaps fluoride treatment should be confined to the dentist chair or toothpaste at home where swallowing can be controlled.
