The frightening truth about water and fluoride

Dear Editor,
Last year during the volcanic eruption, I saw an Icelandic farmer on TV expressing concerns about his animals. He said he was worried about the bones and teeth of his livestock because the volcano was spewing fluoride. I wondered what he meant because I was under the impression that fluoride is good for bones and teeth.
After having read the article in the Advertiser (23/6) about fluoride by Ms Coy, I'm left less confused but more concerned. I did some research too and found, what I believe, are a few more interesting details:
1. While humans and other creatures evolved with natural occurring background fluoride, it’s usually small and ecologically balanced amounts (not unlike natural occurring levels of radioactivity I suspect?). However, the levels artificially added to our water supply are not monitored for quality and the quantity can fluctuate.
2. Fluoride is a toxic by-product of the aluminium industry
3. Fluoride is one of the main ingredients in rat poison.
4. According to Minister James Reilly's spokesperson, the Powers That Be spent €4.78 million in 2010 to fluoridate water in Ireland. (This expenditure during a recession/depression while fluoride is not considered safe, effective, and is not added to water in Northern Ireland or other EU countries) and:
5. While boiling water is effective and will kill bacteria, boiling only serves to intensify the concentration of fluoride or any metals.
If you're lucky enough to be employed and can afford to buy bottled water, don't feel safe. There's no guarantee bottled water doesn't contain fluoride. I also found out that the little triangle with a number in it on the bottom of plastic bottles not only indicates how easy or difficult it is to recycle the bottle, which was my understanding for the last 15 years, but also indicates a degree of plastic that will leech into the liquid and consequently into your body.
Do your homework on this and don't assume one means less leeching than two. The harder the plastic bottle, the less it will leech. Bottles with a two in the triangle are harder, so leech less than the bottles with a 1.
While I'll be able to figure out some way to scrape together extra money to buy a portable water purifier with fluoride removal cartridge, it ain't gonna be cheap or easy. The kind I want costs around €170. The €4.7 million spent annually on fluoridation strikes me as economically wasteful and socially negligent.
Failing to connect the dots, it bypasses preventative thinking and ignores the eventuality of the long term health consequences for Irish people and costs to the HSE.
Even having a tap to turn on is a luxury which I'm grateful for but I'm also asking for a basic human right — safe, free and fluoride free drinking water.
It seems to me to make more sense to consider chemicals guilty until proven innocent rather than the other way around. Based on NI and EU information, I'd say the jury is in on fluoride and it is time to get it out of the water.
