Maine eyes cuts to fluoride in water
January 12, 2011 2:00 AMAUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine water districts are being asked to cut the levels of fluoride they're putting in public water supplies.

The Portland Press Herald reported the cuts being recommended by the state Health and Human Services Department are to bring Maine into compliance with newly adopted federal guidelines.

Maine has been calling for 1 to 2 parts per million of fluoride, but new federal guidelines say a 0.7 part per million level offers sufficient protection from tooth decay. The new guidelines also reduce the risk of splotchy or pitted teeth in adolescents and brittle bones or fractures in older people.

Maine is changing its rules to comply with the lower federal standard.
