Dental expert calls for fluoridation in New Zealand

Dental expert calls for fluoridation in New Zealand
A dental expert has called for fluoridation in areas of New Zealand, following the release of the results of the New Zealand Oral Health Survey.

Dr Martin Lee, Clinical Director of Community Dental Services in Canterbury, said that the results of the survey showed a significant difference between those living in areas with fluoridated water and those living in areas with fluoridated water supplies. The survey showed that both adults and children living in areas where the water is fluoridated enjoyed better standards of oral health than those who live in areas where the water is not fluoridated.

Dr Lee believes that the survey has confirmed the notion that fluoride helps to strengthen and protect the teeth against decay; he claims that fluoridation is completely safe and has significant benefits for oral health. At the moment, the only communities in Canterbury with fluoridated water supplies are Methven and Burnham Military Camp.

Dr Lee said that fluoridating the water supplies would help to reduce spending on dental care, as well as improving standards of oral health; he claims that for every dollar spent on fluoridating the water, ten dollars would be saved on dental health care.

Joy Warren Says :
It seems as though Dr Lee hasn’t seen the news from the U.S. where the Dept of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is proposing a country-wide reduction in the concentration of fluoride in drinking water down to 0.7ppm because of increasing dental fluorosis and the damage caused to bones by fluoride bio-accumulation.

The most powerful Government Department in the fluoridating world has finally admitted that harm is caused by fluoride.

Fluoride does not prevent tooth decay. It delays decay in small fluoridated children because it delays the growth of milk teeth so that when the fluoridated child has its first dental examination at age 5, there are younger teeth in its mouth which, in the neglected child, haven’t had so much time to become decayed. This is supposed to justify fluoridation but doesn’t. What it does do is disrupt metabolism because fluoride is an enzyme inhibitor. What responsible government inflicts this sort of ‘solution’ on whole populations just so that dentists don’t have to extract decayed milk teeth?

There is also the issue of baby bottle dental decay being lumped in with the statistics for decay caused by inadequate dental hygiene. No amount of fluoride will prevent baby bottle decay so the case for fluoridation is weakened because the statistics supporting fluoridation are inflated.
