Letter: Get fluoride out of water supply

I just read the book, "Solved — The Riddle of Illness," by Steven Langer, M.D., and James F. Scheer, author of many health publications. Since it deals with thyroid problems, it was of particular interest to me. And what it says about fluoridated water should be of interest to everyone living in Chico.
A quote from Chapter 29: "One of the worst chemicals in the environment is fluoride. A waste product from the aluminum and synthetic fertilizer industries and a former rat poison, fluoride continues to be added to the water of many cities as a preventative for cavities. Reputable medical and technical publications, however, state that it does not contribute to better teeth and it can cause deterioration of bones and even bone cancer." An excerpt from the "Journal of the American Medical Association" states: "We found a small but significant increase in the risk of hip fracture in both men and women exposed to artificial fluoridation at one part per million, suggesting that low levels of fluoride may increase the risk of hip fracture in the elderly."
Fluoridated water and even toothpaste with fluoride must be avoided by anyone with hypothyroidism, which is an under-active thyroid gland.
Not long ago fluoridation for Redding water was put to the vote. It was rejected, big time. Let us hope the Chico powers that be will rethink their decision and get it out of our waters.
