Canada - Dorval fluoridation to resume

Dorval fluoridation to resume

After a long battle with the City of Montreal and close to two years of technical difficulties, Dorval will have fluoride back in its drinking water within the next two weeks, said mayor Edgar Rouleau.
“Right now, they’re adjusting the control panel systems. We’re in testing mode. What I [was told] was that in a couple of weeks, everything will be operational,” Rouleau said.
Dorval fluoridated its water for 50 years until 2003, when it was forced to stop due to equipment failure.
The borough wanted to upgrade its filtration system with the help of a $400,000 grant from the provincial government, but Montreal barred the municipality from accepting the grant.
The Quebec government supports fluoridation, but Montreal does not fluoridate its water.
It took a change in the Quebec legislation to allow Dorval to determine if it would fluoridate its water and to accept the grant, which was awarded to the municipality in December 2006.

Over the past year and a half, the project to reinstate fluoride at the Dorval water filtration plant has been stalled several times.

Fluoride is a chemical compound that strengthens tooth enamel. According to some dentists, drinking fluoridated water prevents tooth decay. Anti-fluoride activists say the chemical is linked with bone cancer.

But don't worry just drink up.
