There will be no polls of country communities before fluoride is introduced to their water under a Victorian Government initiative.
About 40 community members turned out to meetings in Swan Hill and Kerang this week, but the department says they were information meetings, not consultation sessions.
It says the turnout is low because public opinion generally supports fluoridation.
A poll was carried out before fluoride was introduced to Robinvale last year, but the health department's Jan Bowman says that is not planned for future fluoridation initiatives.
"The National Oral Health Plan and the Victorian Government have all decided and endorsed fluoridation to be introduced into rural and regional areas of Australia and Victoria, we are taking all that information on board and taking a more proactive stance," she said.
