Fluoridation not the answer
In response to the opinion article "tackling hidden epidemic in kids" [Feb. 24], the authors make some recommendations regarding improving oral health of low-income kids. They make the statement, "fluoridate our water. It's simple, effective and cheap." That is not the conclusion of a recent 500-page scientific review by NRC and many other medical and dental professionals on risks and benefits of fluoridation shows there is no sound scientific basis for fluoridating
water to protect dental health. There is evidence that it causes dental or skeletal fluorosis and numerous other issues of toxicological concern. Fluoridating water is a ubiquitous treatment and could negatively affect unwary sensitive individuals from involuntary exposure. Just Google "fluoride" or "fluoride toxicity" and you will get the scoop as to why the myth persists.
