USA - Fluoride gets the brushoff

Fluoride gets the brushoff

OCEAN SPRINGS --Half a dozen dentists on Tuesday recommended adding fluoride to the city's water, but the City Council voted 5-2 not to.
Representatives of the state Department of Health had spoken in favor of fluoridation at a Jan. 16 council meeting, prompting Tuesday's public hearing. The Health Department proposed picking up the tab for start-up costs as well as the first two years of fluoridation.
Ocean Springs' water system has only 40 percent of the fluoride required to be medically effective in the prevention of tooth decay. The proposed increase would equal three drops of fluoride per 42 gallons of water.
Several residents who have children in the school system were opposed to fluoride over concerns of long-term health effects.
"There's no reason for ingesting fluoride when there's another way," said Joyce Shaw. She suggested tablets, pastes or rinses be given to school-age children.
