Laser Spells The End For Fillings
Laser Spells The End For Fillings

A REVOLUTIONARY laser device to detect tooth decay could spell the end for fillings.
The machine can spot hidden problems, meaning patients can be treated before rot sets in.
The machine, designed by scientists at Strathclyde University, Glasgow, uses a laser to create an image of a tooth's mineral content and allows dentists to see if decay has started.
Patients found to have decay are given fluoride to repair their teeth before permanent damage sets in.
Professor John Girkin, who developed the device, said: "Teeth can heal themselves if you spot the decay early enough."
The £1000 machine will be used in trials in Scotland later this year.
