Mercury, a heavy metal, crowds out selenium, the mineral needed for conversion of the hormone T4to its active form T3. Fluoride, which is added to toothpaste and drinking water, may inhibit thyroid functioning, which is another good reason to opt for filtered water. Lab or hair analysis tests are available to see if heavy metal toxicity is an issue for you.
