Letter: Vote yes on fluoride: Don’t be misled by all the fear-mongering
Tuesday, January 8, 2008Stuart citizens will have the opportunity Jan. 29 to make an improvement to their own health. Fluoride occurs naturally in our water, but a slight increase will be an everlasting gift to our children’s dental health. Doctors who dedicate careers to dental health have seen directly the incredible difference this can make.
The true scientific debate about the benefits, effectiveness and safety of community water fluoridation was favorably concluded more than 60 years ago. Since that time, every single rational, well-controlled scientific study confirms these findings. The only “debate” remaining is a political one.
I am just an periodontist, not a politician. I have no financial interest in this issue. I am, however, committed to the betterment of your health as a doctor. One of my duties, unfortunately, is to call out those who promote negligence of the public health, which is exactly what the leaders of the opposition are doing to you.
While an expert in health sciences, I am only now learning about how misguided people deliberately distort and misquote scientific articles to further their own political agenda, at your cost. They are experts at sowing distrust of your doctors. My friends in politics call that fear-mongering, one of the most powerful persuasive methods to sway public opinion.
In the next few weeks, the citizens of Stuart will be besieged by these people. My colleagues around the country have witnessed these exact tactics used against their citizens. Expect to read more letters and interviews from out-of-Florida “experts” scaring you with all sorts of unbelievable claims.
These folks have no stake in you or your children’s health. We do. We are your local Stuart doctors. For those of us who study health as a profession, it is a no-brainer — vote yes for fluoridation.

I suppose in-Florida experts as long as they support fluoridation are believable.
