Australia - Fluoridation an 'unnecessary expense' in some towns

Fluoridation an 'unnecessary expense' in some towns

A Western Queensland council will write to the State Government asking for a re-think on the decision to add fluoride to drinking water. Blackall Mayor Les Wheelhouse says the council has expressed its disappointment over the way the fluoride decision was handled.
The Queensland Government announced last week that most of the state's water supply will be fluoridated to fight tooth decay. Councillor Wheelhouse says communities should have been consulted, but he was not surprised by the Government's process. "It's just a continuance of the attitude of government to local government," he said.
Councillor Wheelhouse says towns like Blackall who access bore water from the Great Artesian Basin already have the benefit of natural fluoridation, so for some it could be an unnecessary expense.
