USA - 18 million people in Southern California will soon be fluoridated
CA fluoridation starts Oct. 1Thursday, August 02, 2007
LOS ANGELES — The water supply for about 18 million people in Southern California will soon be fluoridated, according to an August 1 story in the North County Times.
Water district leaders in the region met officials of the region’s water supplier, the Metropolitan Water District (MWD), in Los Angeles on July 31 to discuss the process that was originally approved four years ago. The process was held up because the MWD had to upgrade five of its water treatment plants. With the multi-million-dollar plant upgrades complete, the water will be fluoridated in phases beginning October 1. Officials from the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were at the meeting and said fluoride was considered safe in small doses. The center recommends an “optimal” level of 0.7 to 1.2 parts per million (ppm). The Southern California water will be fluoridated at a level of about 0.8 ppm.
Critics of fluoridation say it is forced medication and that fluorine is harmful to human health. They aired their views at hearings in 2003 before the MWD voted in favor of fluoridation. The board is not expected to revisit the issue now, the article said.Bob Muir, MWD spokesman, said in the story, “Certainly, we understand the concerns that some members of the community have. But the bottom line is that we're doing this at the request of the medical and dental health communities. That's why we're making this move.”
The MWD will soon launch a public information campaign about fluoridation, Muir told reporters. The MWD supplies water to 26 member water agencies and cities in Southern California, including Los Angeles and San Diego. The article said only Escondido, a small city north of San Diego, has already been fluoridating its water.
