DEVIOUS scammers are duping hundreds of householders into buying unnecessary water filters costing up to €2,500.
The National Consumer Agency (NCA) has received a host of complaints about agents who call to homes and offer to test the tap water. They then show that there are levels of iron, fluoride and other undissolved solids in the drinking water.
They convince many people this is dangerous for their families and offer to sell them a pricey filter.
"They put substances into the water which show that iron and other elements are present," said assistant NCA director Brendan Moylan. "It turns a dark green when there's iron present but that's not a bad thing.
"They tell the people that there are levels of 250 or 350 in their water but don't tell them if that's milligrams or what measurement it is. And they don't say is that the EU limit is about 1,000mg so their water is perfectly safe."
