Not just plants

Q: Jon Carlson of Ashland - The chlorine in the city water affects the growth of plants. A good rain really perks them up. Besides cultivation is there any chemical that can be added to counter the chlorine in the soil?

A: Sharon Morrisey - Jon: I am not aware of any outdoor plants that are adversely affected by chlorine in city water. Some indoor plants growing in pots are sensitive. For these, fill your watering cans the day before you are going to water and allow the chlorine - which is a gas - to dissipate before watering. Fluoride can cause tipburn on some sensitive indoor plants but again I don't know of any outdoors. Therefore, I have no recommendation for you.
