A study of Lithgow residents in central western New South Wales has found overwhelming support for the addition of fluoride to town water to prevent tooth decay.
The Western Research Institute at Charles Sturt University Bathurst surveyed more than 300 households for the report which was presented last night to Lithgow City Council.
Results were taken from a variety of sources, including the council's feedback register and telephone surveys.
The research institute's chief executive officer, Tom Murphy, says support for fluoride in the town water supply was clear.
"What we found was that of the households of Lithgow, 72 per cent of the people are connected to the public water supply, and 76 per cent are in favour of adding fluoride to water to prevent teeth from decaying and 17 per cent were not in favour, so overwhelmingly the Lithgow community was in favour of adding fluoride," he said.
He says the results were surprising.
"That 76 per cent is actually much higher than we found in other communities such as Mudgee or the Northern Rivers councils," he said.
"So compared to other councils too, Lithgow is probably more in favour of fluoride than many other communities."

If they were given both sides of the arguments for and against I'm sure the result would be different.
