Dr. Ann Lindsay is promoting water fluoridation as if it were the best thing in the world, since the CDC endorses it (”Let all benefit from fluoridation,” July 8). The CDC and major dental researchers admit that fluoride's benefits are topical not systemic. So why ingest it?
Let us not forget that water fluoridation was started at the same time lead was allowed in paint and gasoline, asbestos was used for insulation and DDT was said to be safe in our gardens and agricultural fields.
We must still educate ourselves and decide the truth of this matter, because it does not always come from our so-called health officials. The EPA no longer endorses fluoridation and has requested their name be removed from the list of endorsers. Many States are abandoning fluoridation and over 70 U.S. communities have rejected water fluoridation since 1999.
California has a strong American Dental Association, which contributes to organizations that are trying get communities fluoridated. If the ADA sincerely wanted to help, they would give away toothpaste or see more poor families for dental care or contribute to dental educational programs in our public schools. Instead, they choose to continue a practice that is very controversial.
Fluoridation is not cheap, if you can see the increase health risks involved. There is more information now about health concerns than there was 50 years ago when this practice began without the FDA requiring any studies.
Dr. Lindsay is not an expert on toxic substances. She should ask a chemistry professor, Paul Connett, who has studied the fluoridation issue extensively for over 10 years. He regularly debates the issue with health officials. He is available at www.fluoridealert.org.
Or she could consulate with Sweden's Dr. Arvid Carlsson, a pharmacologist who won the Nobel Prize in medicine/physiology in 2000. He was instrumental in convincing the Swedish parliament that fluoridation can cause some serious health issues.
And then there is Tennessee state legislator Dr. Joey Hensley, also a physician, who urged all Tennessee water departments to stop fluoridation in December 2006.
Dr. Lindsay, water filters do not take out fluoride. Try calling the manufacturers directly and they will tell you the truth.
