THE enormous health risks to people, food sources, water sources and the environment posed by the operations of aluminium smelters are not worth the potential income, Congress of the People member and supporter, Dr Surendra Rampersad has said.

Speaking at a political meeting in Otaheite Tuesday, Dr Rampersad said: “Fluoride is one of the pollutants produced by the manufacture of aluminium and as a Dentist, I can tell you a little about fluoride and its effects. This aluminium smelter is estimated to produce one kilogram of fluoride per tonne of aluminium. This adds to 341 tonnes of fluoride per year. Fluoride is a very reactive substance and gets into the water, air and soil.”

“In adults, exposure to high levels of fluoride can result in denser bones. But if exposure is high enough, the bones may become fragile and brittle. In addition, fluoride has been definitively shown to poison kidney function at high doses.”

“A new study from China in 2005 found an increased rate of kidney disease in people consuming more than two parts per million, over two milligrams of fluoride in a litre of drinking water can cause renal damage in children.”..................
