Canada - Fluoridation of Dorval water temporarily interrupted

The fluoridation of water at the Dorval water-filtration plant has been temporarily halted due to renovations to the facility.

The Dorval water-filtration plant is undergoing renovations which required the fluoridation of the water to be temporarily halted.

The City of Montreal is in charge of the work which involves the refurbishment of the facility’s filters. Fluoridation of the water stopped March 1 and will start up again in October 2018.

Last month, Montreal announced a 10-year plan to overhaul the water-distribution systems in Dorval and Lachine. Once the 10-year project is complete, the two plants will close and Dorval will get its water from the facility in Pointe-Claire. Lachine will be hooked up to filtration plants in the Sud-Ouest and LaSalle boroughs.

Both Dorval and Pointe-Claire facilities add fluoride to the water.

Health Canada offers fluoride information at https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/healthy-living/your-health/environment/fluorides-human-health.html.

“At low concentrations, fluoride in drinking water prevents dental cavities and improves oral health,” according to Health Canada. “Over 90 national and international governments and health organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), endorse the fluoridation of drinking water to prevent tooth decay.”
