Expansion of fluoride in Tasmania’s water supplies?

.............The considerations
People are individuals with different needs. In a community we have infants, adults and children with differing hydration needs, decay rates and various stages of decay development. Fluoride concentration in water however, is static. The number of questions regarding fluoride accumulation and its effect on the body are increasing.
Our profession has extensively researched and confirmed that fluoride delivered through direct application to teeth strengthens tooth enamel and prevents tooth decay. The greatest benefits are seen when this topical fluoride is administered during childhood.
So I ask myself, is water fluoridation the best way of solving the decay problem? And why is education, patient behaviour modification and improved access to dental services not further up the action list?
While I don’t have a solution, I do believe it is important to raise awareness about tooth decay and to keep having these debates. As Tasmanians we need to keep asking questions and working towards a better way to combat tooth decay in our rural and remote communities.
