During an unusual citizens commentary at the Huber Heights City Council meeting on July 26, three 2010 Wayne High School graduates voiced their concerns about having fluoride in the drinking water in the city of Huber Heights.
Chase Warden, Alex Turpin and Steven Peden addressed Council on the issue. Also in attendance were Wayne graduates Darrell Russell and Cassie Patrick.
This group includes up to 10 people who range from eighth grade to 2010 Wayne graduates that began meeting as an informational group looking at political and other issues since October. Turpin told the Courier the group meets on a weekly basis to talk about issues. She said they had all been friends and this was "a way for us to hang out."
The group has been researching the fact that some cities in Ohio don't fluoridate while Huber Heights does. They said that in 1969, voters in Wayne Township voted to fluoridate the water and noted that the Ohio Revised Code gave cities a period of time to opt in or out.
This group would like to see Huber Heights defloridate their water and asked Council for their support to take this issue to the state legislature. The group verbally presented to Council excerpts from a fluoride study
(visit http://www.westonaprice.org/environmental-toxins/249-fluoride-worse-than-we-thought.html) by the Dr. Weston A. Price Foundation and gave each Council member a written packet of the study. Council expects to have a committee meet with this group to further hear their presentation on fluoride.
Turpin was asked how she felt about Council's response.
"I thought it was good," she said.
Council member Jan Vargo told the group she was impressed with their presentation, noting it was not for any class, but expressed their passion. She said the group would have to convince her that fluoride is not good for her.
