This letter is in response to the article in the October 9, 2009 edition of the Gainesville Sun (“GRU won’t remove fluoride; commission will vote”) in which Commissioner Craig Lowe and Dr Scott Tomar support the inclusion of fluoride in the Gainesville water supply. Dr Tomar concludes by saying: “The three bottom lines are water fluoridation is safe, effective and cost saving.” The “facts” as I see them lead me to a different conclusion.

FACT 1: Fluoride “causes dental fluorosis [yellowing and pitting of the tooth enamel], damages DNA repair enzymes, increases risk for osteoporosis, increases risk for cancer (bone, oral, bladder, lung), causes genetic damage, causes skeletal fluorosis (a crippling degeneration of the skeleton), causes abnormal brain development, causes hypothyroidism, (and) reduces fertility in men.” (Neurosurgeon Russell L. Blaylock MD, in “Health and Nutrition Secrets That Can Save Your Life”)

FACT 2: Since 2006 over 30 water districts have ceased using fluoride after Dr Joey Hensley, a physician and state legislator in Tennessee and a former supporter of fluoridation, urged all water districts in the State of Tennessee to discontinue fluoridating their drinking water because of the great danger to human health.

FACT 3: Fluoride does not prevent or reduce cavities. “According to the current consensus view of the dental research community, fluoride's primary, if not sole, benefit to teeth comes from topical application to the exterior surface of teeth, not from ingestion (emphasis added). “Within countries that fluoridate their water, recent large-scale surveys of dental health, utilizing modern scientific methods not employed in the early surveys from the 1930s-1950s, have found little difference in

tooth decay…between fluoridated and unfluoridated communities.” (From

Fluoride Action Network)

FACT 4: A 1981 Rand Study reviewed the literature and previous studies of the connection between fluoride use and dental health and concluded that the studies were so poorly conducted and designed that they should not serve as a basis for making public policy!

FACT 5: “Fluoride is a potent poison. In toxicology texts it is classified with cyanide....the amount of fluoride contained in a tube of toothpaste is enough to kill a child.” (Dr John R. Lee, “The Politics of Water Fluoridation”)

FACT 6: A box of toothpaste with fluoride contains wording similar to this: “Warning: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than that used for brushing, seek professional help or contact a poison control center immediately.” This warning was required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997. A news report said that in 2005, 22,000 people sought professional help for possible fluoride poisoning.

FACT 7: In 2006 the American Dental Association (ADA) warned mothers that

mixing tap water with baby formula would expose young children to amounts of fluoride that could result in dental fluorosis (yellowing and pitting of the enamel of the teeth). The ADA also said that using tap water with low levels of fluoride would not solve the problem because of fluoride that’s in the baby formula itself, amounts ingested from toothpaste, and additional fluoride taken in from dietary supplements.

FACT 8: The effects of exposure to fluoride are cumulative and over time can lead to the various diseases and degenerative conditions set forth by Dr Blaylock above. For example, fifty percent of the fluoride that is ingested ends up in the bone leading to possible skeletal fluorosis, osteoporosis, and hip fractures.

FACT 9: In water supplies that are fluoridated, fluoride is sprayed on lawns; used for cooking food; given to household animals; and other uses. Because the fluoride is added to the public water system and not targeting the “at risk population“, most of this toxic chemical ends up in the surface and ground water supply, the soil, the air, and other wildlife and plants, polluting our entire environment.

Fact 10: The most common form of fluoride (fluorosilicic acid) used in the

public water supply is not pharmaceutical grade but comes from the scrubbing systems of the phosphate industry. Other toxic metals (e.g., lead, arsenic) and radioactive substances commonly accompany the fluoride. What isn’t allowed to be dumped into our natural waterways is acceptable for dumping into the public water system.

While much more could be said, the three bottom lines are water fluoridation is unsafe, ineffective, and very costly!
