Canada - Fluoridation a choice

Fluoridation a choice
Tuesday October 13 2009
The topic of fluoridation has been brought up in the past by health advocate groups and concerned citizens in Halton and Halton Hills.
I have not heard any news regarding this topic in quite some time as debates on the issue have been pushed back. As of this writing, regional council is scheduled to hold a debate on this issue later this year. Therefore I feel compelled to bring the fluoridation issue up once again.
A large number of municipal water systems in Ontario have stopped the fluoridation process, however, ours has not.
The biggest argument for fluoridating drinking water in the past has been the claim that it helps prevent tooth decay and promotes overall healthier teeth in the population. However recent studies done by the National Research Council (NRC United States) and other respected organizations have shown that there is little if any link between the fluoridation of drinking water and the health of teeth.
In addition, they have concluded that fluoridating may have detrimental health effects on body, with children being the most at risk.
The NRC study was conducted in areas of the United States who have a fluoride content of 4.0 ppm. In Halton Hills the average concentration is 0.5-0.8 ppm. Although there exists a large spread between these two concentrations, it’s hard to justify the risks of water fluoridation when the benefits seem to be non-existent.
We all should have the choice to decide whether or not we want this in our drinking water and unfortunately we are being denied this choice.
