Victory in Maine: Vinalhaven rejects fluoride on second vote
Please send your congratulations to Jessica Farrelly and her group for achieving this major reversal on fluoridation.
Here is an excerpt from a newspaper report giving the details of the victory:
This was the second time in less than a year that Vinalhaven has voted on the following question:
"Shall fluoride be added to the public water supply for the intended purpose of reducing tooth decay?"
At the November 2008 presidential balloting, the count was 423 in favor of the chemical additive and 320 against. Tuesday's vote reversed that decision by a 3 to 1 margin, with 99 votes for adding the treatment and 317 against.
Vinalhaven resident and mother of two Jessica Farrelly said Wednesday that a loophole in the law allowed her and other concerned citizens to petition the town to reconsider last year's fluoride vote.
Gathering more than 100 signatures, Farrelly's group returned the question to the ballot. She said her concerns were primarily financial.
"The question didn't explain the risks and costs," she said, adding that the specific language of the question was mandated by the state. Farrelly said the town's water system is in need of line replacements and other upgrades, and many of those voting in Vinalhaven live outside the water district. "They won't pay for it or drink it," she said.
In discussing health concerns raised during her research on the issue, Farrelly said individuals need to make their own decisions. She added that the chemical is used as a pesticide and can be found in many common foods.
Resistance grows to fluoridation of Southampton, UK
On Monday June 8, citizens (campaigners from Hampshire Against Fluoridation) delivered a petition to the British parliament signed by over 15,000 people objecting to the decision by the South Central Strategic Health Authority's decision to fluoridate Southampton, despite the fact that the SHA's own survey found that 72% of those polled were against the program. They met with the All Party Parliamentary Group Against Fluoridation, and were joined by three local MPs.
Collecting over 15,000 signatures on anything is a major achievement. Getting 35 people to journey to Parliament is another. Winning over local MPS - including those who are pro-fluoridation - is yet another. Please send your congratulations to Caroline Place at dun4olly4vine@yahoo.co.uk , I am sure she will share them with the rest of the group: Hampshire Against Fluoridation.

Fluoride is a *topical* agent that kills germs on contact and it was never meant to be
ingested. It’s basically similar to swallowing Neosporin.
It’s very easy for everyone to dismiss anti-fluoridation as the movement of crackpots. To all of you I say this: You are asking the wrong question. The question is not whether or not water fluoridation is good for you.
The question is why any municipality would medicate the water supply without
your consent. Why not dump multivitamins into the water? Vitamins are also
good for you right? The answer is obvious. Just because you may get all of your vitamins from one source doesn't mean your neighbor does. Wise up people. We personally don't really care about the 'why'. We just want it stopped! Join us in the growing movement.
