OFFICIALS EYE ‘DISTURBING TREND’ IN CHILDREN’S ORAL HEALTH
With the Patrick administration’s top public health official describing a “very disturbing trend” of tooth decay among Massachusetts children, lawmakers and oral health advocates gathered to celebrate the efforts of public officials to combat dental disease. According to Health Care for All, a consumer advocacy group, nearly half of Massachusetts children experience tooth decay before third grade, a disease five times more common than asthma. Senate President Therese Murray joined supporters to receive an “oral health hero” award, part of an annual ceremony hosted by Watch Your Mouth, a coalition of health care groups that advocate for dental policy. Murray said a recently enacted law to increase access to oral health care was a “great victory” for Massachusetts and would help children receive essential dental coverage. “We struggled over the last several years, particularly in part of the district I represent, which is Cape Cod, to even get any dentists to accept Medicaid patients,” she said. Other award recipients were Rep. William Pignatelli (D-Lenox), state Medicaid Director Thomas Dehner and longtime dentist Dr. Joel Pearlman, who has specialized in oral health of people with developmental disabilities.
