Often overlooked, good dental care is a must if you wish to keep your senior pet around for a few more years.
This begins with regular brushing with a soft toothbrush and pet toothpaste, which may be chicken or tuna-flavored. Avoid "human" toothpaste. The fluoride in them is toxic to animals, Salbego said.
Like humans, pets need annual, professional teeth cleaning. Promptly treat broken teeth and any periodontal disease that may occur since infection can enter the bloodstream and damage organs, Salbego said.
