Kenya - Time to probe bottled water firms Publication Date: 6/17/2008

Time to probe bottled water firms Publication Date: 6/17/2008
In my research as a university student on the composition of mineral water, I have found that the details indicated on the labels of mineral water bottles are incorrect and therefore misleading to consumers.
I was keen to establish whether the levels of the minerals indicated on the bottle were tallying with the levels actually found in the water. Of particular interest was the fluoride level of 2.30mg/1 of one sample in the research. This is in stark contrast to the 1.7mg/1 of fluoride indicated on the bottles.
Further research indicates that fluoride is especially harmful to children, making this the primary cause for my concern. Some of the bottled water is certified by the Kenya Bureau of Standards and Super Brands as a quality product and yet the information provided on the containers is falsified.
In the interest of the public, I am humbly requesting that this matter be looked into so that Kenyans are not deceived that what they are consuming is safe.
BENEDICT NGILA, Nairobi.
