A Senate committee is considering a bill to mandate fluoride in all drinking water. But, in the small town of Welsh, some citizens are trying to take fluoride out of their water.
Fluoride's been in Welsh's water system since the seventies but one group say's it's time to take fluoride out of the water-because they fear it does more damage than good. "It worries me a great deal sometimes I think I just want to move," says Jamie Leonard. She wants fluoride out of the city's water system.
Leonard wants people to know that fluoride isn't as beneficial as once thought.
"I think there's a lot of misinformation they never question their dentist they never question their doctor," says Leonard. Years ago towns around the country added fluoride to their water as a way to add vitamins and to fight cavities
Jim Ewing with Welsh's utilities says, "Fluoride came in years ago and the government supplied it for years. Now they're saying we're getting too much fluoride.
Ewing supports fluoride in the water system, and dismisses the argument that it's toxic. "I remember a few years ago where water caused cancer anything you do causes cancer," says Ewing. According to LUS Lafayette has never added fluoride to its drinking water. The issue was raised in the 80's, and voters said no. If house bill 312 does pass everyone in the state will be required to add it.
