Grand Rapids became the world's first city to fluoridate its drinking water more than six decades ago. Now, some local officials say it's time to reconsider the practice.
Local officials are talking with scientists at Grand Valley State University about potential long-term effects of exposure to fluoride, which some consider a toxic chemical.
Corky Overmyer is director of sustainability for Grand Rapids. He says the issue is worth studying because of the need to eliminate toxins in the community.
But many people still support fluoridation. Mayor George Heartwell says the city won't abandon it without hard scientific evidence.
The president of the West Michigan Dental Society says tooth decay rates are higher in areas without fluoridation than in areas that have it.

After unveiling the monument to fluoridation recently can't imagine them chucking it out
