YARMOUTH — The town will not be the first Cape community to fluoridate its water supply.
The plan failed overwhelmingly last night at town election. Voters rejected the proposal, 4,891-1,599.
Several other ballot questions also failed, including a $1.65 million override request from the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District. By a narrow margin, residents voted against withdrawing from the Cape Cod Commission.
By far, the largest gap between yes and no votes was the fluoridation question.
The fluoride debate has swirled for months. Many residents against fluoridation say it is unnecessary, a health risk and costly. Supporters say it improves everybody's oral health.Town officials estimate it would cost just less than $1 million to implement and nearly $100,000 a year to maintain. Critics say the money could be used for other purposes in town.
West Yarmouth resident Shayne Grier, leaving the Mattacheese Middle School after voting yesterday, said people should get fluoride from their dentist, not the public water supply."What is wrong with the water we've got?" Grier asked.
