Uk - Dental Surgeon's Fluoride Concerns

Dental Surgeon's Fluoride Concerns

A LIVERPOOL dental surgeon has criticised plans to add fluoride to water supplies, claiming it could create complacency about dental care.
Dr Melissa Goddard, principal of Apollonia Dental and Cosmetic Centre, argues adding the substance to the water supply, as suggested recently by Health Secretary Alan Johnson, could potentially make people think they can be casual with things like brushing their teeth and flossing.
The proposed expansion in the fluoridation of UK water supply as a step to improve dental health has caused a stir with claims it could reduce bone mineral density, increase the number of bone fractures and even the possibility of it being carcinogenic.
But Dr Goddard, who practises at her surgery on Rodney Street, says it is more important the public is educated in good oral health practices.
Dr Goddard said: "Even if water is fluoridated, tooth decay will still occur.
Education regarding appropriate dietary habits, encouraging people to eat less sugar and visit the dentist regularly is important. Water fluoridation is not simply a means to an end."
