USA - Fluoride may be damaging

Fluoride may be damaging

Dear Editor:
Torrington City Council is considering adding fluoride to city water. Do you want fluoride in drinking water? What is fluoride? “Wet scrubbers,” pollution control devices used by the phosphate industry to capture fluoride gases produced in production of commercial fertilizer.

In the past, before wet scrubbers, the gases escaped through exhaust vents and scorched the surrounding vegetation, destroyed crops and crippled cattle.

With wet scrubbers and other sophisticated air-pollution control technology little fluoride is pumped into the atmosphere. Fluoride remains one of the largest environmental liabilities of the phosphate industry. The problem lies in the fact that raw phosphate ore contains up to 4 percent fluoride. Sulfuric acid is used to vaporize the ore causing the fluoride content to form additional toxic gaseous compounds, hydrogen fluoride and silicon tetraflouride.

So thanks to scrubbers the environmental damage of the 1950s and 1960s has been eliminated. That’s because the fluoride acid (hydrofluyorosilicic acid), classified as a hazardous waste, is captured by the scrubbers. Next it is barreled up and sold, unrefined, to communities across the United States. Communities then add this hazardous waste as the primary fluoride chemical for water fluoridation.

Because of modern studies, 97 percent of Western Europe has chosen to be fluoride free. Germany has a national vote and here in the Equality State our city council wants to leave we the people out of the decision. Fluoride is the only chemical added to drinking water for the purpose of medication (“prevent tooth decay”).

According to the Centers for Disease Control, fluoride’s “predominant effect is post eruptive and topical.” In other words, any benefits that accrue from the use of fluoride come from the direct application of fluoride to the outside of teeth (after they have erupted into the mouth) and not from ingestion. There is no need, therefore, to expose all other tissues to fluoride by swallowing.

In November 2006, the American Dental Association (ADA) advised that parents should avoid giving babies fluoridated water. Other dental researchers have made similar recommendations over the past few years. Babies exposed to fluoride are at high risk of developing dental fluorosis – a permanent tooth defect caused by fluoride damaging the cells which form the teeth. Other tissues in the body may also be affected by early-life exposures to fluoride.

According to a recent review published in the medical journal The Lancet, fluoride may damage the developing brain, causing learning deficits and other problems. While serving eight years on the California Medical Board, 3rd District, two of the retired neurosurgeons on the board posited that adult and child ADD/ADHD and other hyperactivity disorders might be due to overexposure to fluoride found naturally in some areas, in drinking water, soda, beer, toothpaste and all products made or refined with fluoride infused water.

Paul E. Puebla,

Torrington
