With political campaigns in full gear, there is a nagging question each candidate should answer with utmost sincerity: Is it ethically responsible to medicate our drinking water?
Fluoride is the only chemical that is added to water in an effort to enhance it. (Chlorine is used to disinfect and sanitize water from bacteria).
This is especially conflicting with the platform of virtually every political party that claims to protect the civil liberties, personal rights and informed consent of the public because of the involuntary nature of the medication.
It is impossible to control any one person's dosage of fluoride because it is distributed in the water. It is present in virtually every food/beverage to varying degrees. You could think of it as a prescription drug with instructions stating one-size-fits-all suitable for everyone in perpetuity.
Which doctor would take responsibility for the lawsuit ensuing from that kind of prescription? Fluoride has not shown to reduce cavities below the levels of those found in non-fluoridated communities. So in other words, we are putting ourselves and our families at risk for a variety of side effects while the primary purpose of fluoridation goes unrealized.
Impoverished areas that were supposed to benefit from fluoridation continue to struggle against dental decay despite decades of fluoridation.
The Fluoride Action Network launched a Professionals' Statement on fluoridation that has since been signed by more than 1,500 medical/dental professionals and almost 10,000 people.
This statement's goal is to bring about a congressional hearing on fluoridation where proponents and opponents alike are required to answer (under oath) regarding the practice.
The safety of our drinking water deserves an "honest" answer from experts on the issue. I'd prefer Congress prioritized such an issue ahead of Roger Clemens' medical history.
