Question: Why do my houseplants develop brown tips on all of their leaves ?

Answer: There are several possibilities as to why your plants develop brown spots at the edge of their leaves. First, you may have let your plants dry out. Just one day of dryness can cause brown tips. Second, you may have a buildup of soluble mineral salts in the soil. A whitish crust on the soil surface or around the rim of the pot indicates this. You can remedy the problem by making sure that when you water, the excess water always runs out of the pot's drainage hole taking the salts with it. You may also need to fertilize less often. Another possibility is fluoride in your tap water. This can be remedied by adding a teaspoonful of limestone to a 6-inch pot of soil. The lime will tie up the fluoride so plants cannot absorb it.
