Just say no to fluoridation

Dr. Bill Choby of Latrobe asks "Why force fluoridation?" (Letters, Feb. 24 and PghTrib.com). He continues with a thoughtful assessment of the "fluoride issue" -- plans to put fluoride into Westmoreland County's drinking water to prevent dental cavities ("Bill to force fluoridation spurs debate," Feb. 11 and PghTrib.com).
Perhaps Choby was too kind and diplomatic to point up the real stupidity and hazards of fluoridating water supplies. There are literally thousands of articles and scientific papers published regarding what I term "the thoughtless practice of fluoridation."
It seems that elected officials and their ill-informed advisers have turned a deaf ear to the logical assessment of the published information.

Dr. Arvid Carlsson, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine (2000), worked successfully to have fluoridation banned in Sweden. He said, "I am quite convinced that water fluoridation, in a not-too-distant future, will be consigned to medical history." I have been, for 27 years, a consultant to companies producing chemicals and apparatus for research and laboratory testing. Part of my protocol is to attend six or seven scientific seminars each year and interview research scientists to determine trends for my client companies. I've been writing letters for at least 20 years regarding the bad idea of water fluoridation.
Instead of debating whether we should fluoridate more water supplies, we should be considering how to ban a practice that is not as safe as advocates would have us believe.
It also violates an individual's right to informed consent to medication. If fluoridation were presented today as a "new drug application," it would fail to be approved by the FDA.
Yet we trust elected officials -- many with very little understanding of the hazards of fluoridation -- to promote this very bad idea.
