A U.S. dental group has extended its endorsement of water fluoridation
CHICAGO, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- A U.S. dental group has extended its endorsement of water fluoridation by licensing a logo to be put on bottled water.
The American Dental Association announced its "Smile Healthy" certificate will begin appearing this spring on one-gallon containers of "Kid Pure" fluoridated water bottled by Water Source One.
"Some people may not live in areas where their drinking water is fluoridated, or perhaps they prefer the taste or convenience of bottled water," Dr. Mark Feldman, ADA president, said in a statement. "Now when you see the Smile Healthy logo on bottled water, you know you're doing something good for your oral health."
The Smile Healthy certification program may be expanded to other products, such as sugar-free beverages and dairy products.
To be eligible to carry the "Smile Healthy" certificate, the ADA Board of Trustees requires the product benefit oral health, meet oral health standards and undergo testing. No exclusive company product arrangements are permitted and the product category is open to all who meet the criteria.
One percent of net sales generated from the sale of these products will be directed to the ADA Foundation to fund access-to-dental care, education, research and public awareness.
