The Prime Minister is yet to state his position on the water in Warrnambool, in south-west Victoria, being fluoridated. The Member for Wannon, David Hawker, wrote to John Howard last month after a request by residents at a meeting opposing the fluoridation. Some Warrnambool residents believe a vote is needed so the community has a say about whether their water should be treated. Mr Hawker says he is reluctant to state his personal view on fluoride.
"It's not a federal issue and so therefore I am rather keen to see that the State Government consult properly with the people of Warrnambool to work out what they should be doing, but nonetheless [if] the State Government won't listen then the people have another way of bringing it to their attention," he said.
