Unthinkable to put fluoride into water
I didn't know whether to laugh or scream when seeing the picture of our two Eastern Municipal Water District managers proudly standing in front of tanks with the words: “DANGER: Hydrofluosilicic acid” (“Water district to add fluoride,” Aug. 24). This fluoridating agent is a waste product of the phosphate fertilizer industry. It eats through metal pipes and dissolves rubber tires. Our EMWD plans to dispose of it into our bodies and minds beginning this October. Unthinkable!
Studies from various countries reveal that fluoridation actually increases cavities. The largest dental survey in the US ever done - of nearly 40,000 school children - by the National Institute of Dental Research revealed that many non-fluoridated cities had lower tooth decay rates than fluoridated cities; e.g., the city with the lowest tooth decay rate was not fluoridated.
Unsurprisingly, the California Dental Association Foundation contributed $5.5 million to the Metropolitan Water District to begin building fluoridation facilities. This will inevitably reap more future profits for dentists in filling more cavities.
Let's fight to keep our valley's water fluoride-free! Please write your EWMD officials before their next meeting on Sept. 5 in Perris.
