Brushing their teeth twice a day is the norm for these three and four-year-olds at Maple Hill Head Start in Lansing. And they have fun doing it -- once after breakfast and again after lunch."It's really important to start young when those teeth are just baby teeth and protecting them so the adult teeth come in in the right space," says Head Start's Teresa Spitzer, R.N..
Starting in the fall, every child enrolled in Early Head Start and Head Start in our state will have additional protection through a free program called Varnish! Michigan.
"Fluoride and fluoride varnish, especially, will help prevent tooth decay. It would give protection to the baby teeth," says Spitzer.
Through Varnish! Michigan more than 1,400 kids in Early Head Start and Head Start in our area will have their teeth treated with fluoride at least twice a year.
"They might not be ones that are actually going to the dentist, so we're able to provide the fluoride varnish without actually going to the dentist, because they'll actually do it in the classroom," explains Spitzer.
The program is sponsored by the Michigan of Department of Community Health through a $250,000 grant from Delta Dental. Senior Vice President Nancy Hostetler says the treatment can help reduce tooth decay by up 60 percent, but without it there's a chance of developing dental disease.
"It does affect the child's ability to chew. It affects their self esteem, and frankly if oral disease isn't treated it can lead to complications," Hostetler says.
That's why preventing it is key.
