Australia - Fluoridation calls resurface

Fluoridation calls resurface

THE Department of Human Services has renewed calls to add fluoride to Warrnambool's water supply.
DHS spokesman Bram Alexander said the provision of fluoridated water supplies in rural Victoria remained a priority of the State Government.
``The DHS have been approached by dentists and health professionals in Warrnambool in recent times in support of fluoridation, and their views are being considered,'' Mr Alexander said.
Fluoride has been added to Melbourne's water supply for more than 30 years but the fluoride debate about its perceived health benefits continues.
Wannon Water refused to comment on the matter despite a source claiming the company was willing to ``give in to DHS pressure''. Wannon Water marketing and communications manager Annette Cannon said the issue was not relevant for Wannon Water to comment on because it was a health issue.
The state's initiative to introduce fluoride to all water supplies throughout Victoria was designed to improve oral health, particularly for children.
There is a direct benefit for teeth, especially with children.
Six year-old children living in fluoridation areas have 45 per cent less decay than those who don't,'' Mr Alexander said.
He said DHS received $1.5 million from the recent state budget as part of a preventative dental health campaign for regional communities requesting water fluoridation. ``The money will be used to further introduce water fluoride to regional centres that do not already contain fluoride,'' he said.
We have provided information to the community and we would not make a decision about Warrnambool's water supply until we had the support of the community.
The plan is under consideration and the water company (Wannon Water) will be directed by us.
It will be strictly regulated and monitored.

Never ending story
